Staying physically active may prevent myopia progression - Tuesday, June 12, 2007

Researchers in Denmark performed a cross-sectional study of 155 first-year medical students from the University of Copenhagen to investigate whether physical activity influences development/progression of myopia. The students were given a complete eye exam, answered a questionnaire and performed a cycle ergometer test.

They found that students spending less time being physically active had significantly increased refractive errors than physically active students. But there was no association between the students' physical fitness level and refractive error.

Interestingly, they found no association between the number of hours studied and refractive error.

Take home message. College students: ride your bike to the library.
