Laser Vision Correction
Serving Longmont, Lafayette and the Northern Colorado region
Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK)
PRK is a surface laser vision correction treatment option for people who have thin corneas and are not candidates for LASIK, or for those who like the idea of a flapless procedure. The eyes are numbed with a topical anesthetic drop prior to surgery. The procedure is performed by removing the epithelium layer of the cornea and applying the excimer laser (same laser as used for LASIK) to reshape the cornea. The healing time takes approximately 3 to 5 days during which the patient's vision will be blurry and hazy until the epithelium layer heals. Discomfort from the procedure is normal, however an oral medication called Neurontin is prescribed pre-operatively to help reduce post-op discomfort. The patient will also be prescribed antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops to be used both pre and post-operatively. Most patients are able to resume normal activities such as driving and working after 4 – 5 days.
At the Eye Care Center of Northern Colorado, we are proud to provide LASIK and other vision correction procedures to Northern Colorado residents including Longmont, Lafayette, Boulder, Denver, Fort Collins and Greeley.
